Operation Cast Lead (Days 1 -5)

Update 31 December 2008: Culling items from various OSINT reports it appears that at least two full IDF armored divisions have received their warning orders for entry into the Gaza Strip. This armored movement appears imminent with columns prepared to enter simultaneously in the north, south and central Gaza. The above API image of IDF Merkava tanks was located on the IsraelInsider website.

In another development both YnetNews.Com and Defense-Update.Com are reporting that the longest range missiles yet fired by HAMAS are of Communist Chinese origin. IDF Home Front Command's Deputy Commander, Brigadier-General Avraham Ben-David, made this disclosure to pool reporters. Research lead me to identify the weapon as a NORINCO manufactured Type 90A/B 122mm artillery rocket. This identification has been confirmed by the Defense-Update report linked above.

Update 29 December 2008: The title for this NEIN Blog entry has been changed to reflect the name the Israel Defense Forces have applied to the current military operation in Gaza, "Operation Cast Iron." The original "Syria: A Strategic Assessment" report remains below as the bedrock of this entry.

The image above is from the DrudgeReport website. It's one of the best images I've found reflecting my assessment that we're all witness to a new dawn (as opposed to the sunset the doomed islamists of Hamas and their benefactors in Tehran crow about) of Israeli military expansion and dominance in the region following the poorly executed Hezbollah war of summer 2006.

At this point I would be remiss not to bring your attention that the fact that since 1948 all Israeli military operations which have had as their objective the establishment and security of the state of Israel persuant to the eternal promise of YHWH in the Abrahamic Covenant and His promise of restoration following the diaspora judgments have been overwhelming successes, and any military withdrawal, retreat or ceding to the sons of Ishmael of those Covenant lands has been met with death, a sense of defeat and despair. A new era is dawning, a new Israel is about to emerge - and we, the grafted in branch of the olive tree, are witness to these events.

UPDATE 27 December 2008: This report, originally published back on 14 April 2008 is being bumped to the top due to the continued and blatant missile and mortar barrage aggression of the HAMAS Islamic terrorists in Gaza against civilian targets in Israel; the collusion between the terrorists of Hezbollah and HAMAS in Lebanon (second front against Israel), as well as the anticipated intervention by Syria and, eventually, the Islamic Republic of Iran in what I assess to be a high risk/high probability potential for renewed full-scale warfare in the Eastern Mediterranean littoral region.

There is also a considerable potential for this round of hostilities to suddenly morph into the prophetic military actions described in Psalm 83 and Isaiah 17. These predicted wars result in Israel enlarging its geographic size by nearly twenty times that of the present, as well as the total annihilation of Damascus, Syria. These events obviously warrant near real-time monitoring as events on the ground have a high potential to escalate very rapidly. There is also a potenial conflict between Hindu India and Islamic Pakistan which could erupt just as suddenly, changing the current paradigm in South Asia just as quickly.

Syria: A Strategic Assessment

By Aharon Etengoff (WeaponSurvey.com) and Sean Osborne (NEIN)

Introduction:

An observer of recent articles emanating from or about the strategic situation in the Middle East might come away with the impression that the Islamic Republic of Iran poses the most immediate and formidable regional threat to peace, or that HAMAS in Gaza and the West Bank and Hezbollah in Lebanon, acting as proxy forces of Iranian designs, might constitute another facet of this same threat. That impression is correct to a certain degree. However, the current center of gravity for the prospect of an imminent eruption of regional warfare lies in Syria.

A brief of Syrian strategic WMD programs, weapons and delivery systems follows to illustrate the immediate threat, as well as in support of the conclusion of this assessment.

Nuclear:

Syria maintains a small 30kW neutron research reactor at Dayr Al Hajar, (under IAEA safeguards), and operates a uranium recovery micro-pilot plant at Homs. Syria has also begun construction of a radioactive waste processing facility to manage waste resulting from the production and application of radioisotopes.

In July 1998, Syria and Russia signed a memorandum regarding the construction of a 25-MW light water nuclear research center. In January 2000, Moscow approved a draft program with Damascus that included cooperation on civil nuclear power. In May 2001, Russian and Syrian officials discussed construction of a $500 million tri-superphosphate factory near the city of Palmyra – which would be part of an overall agreement to develop a nitric fertilizer production facility in Deyr ez-Zor and a phosphate fertilizer plant in Homs. In January 2003, Russia and Syria reportedly began negotiations over the construction of a $2 billion nuclear facility that would include a nuclear power plant as well as a nuclear desalination plant. However, the Russian Foreign Ministry denied that such discussions had occurred.

Phosphatic Rock & Uranium:

Syria has an abundance of phosphatic deposits and produces approximately one-fifth of the phosphate rock mined throughout the entire Middle East. Indeed, the Homs uranium recovery plant was designed as a precursor to a pilot and industrial scale plant. Potential operations included refining, conversion, enrichment, and fuel fabrication. However, industrial-scale uranium extraction was deemed financially unfeasible. Nevertheless, Damascus signed a tripartite contract with the IAEA and an unknown entity in 1996 to ameliorate the recovery of uranium from tri-superphosphate.

In January 2005, Israeli Mossad Chief Meir Dagan noted that "there must always be an intelligence effort to check the recent information on the start of nuclear programs in Syria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia."

Missiles:

Arsenal

The current Syrian missile arsenal includes hundreds of liquid-fueled Scud-type missiles, as well as solid-fueled SS-21 and FROG missiles. Syria has also begun indigenous production of Scud-type missiles, but is still dependent on foreign assistance for the production of solid-propellant and liquid-propellant rocket motors.

Missile Development

Syria continues to work toward achieving a solid-propellant rocket motor development and production capability. Syria is also developing a liquid-propellant missile program with Russian and North Korean aid. In addition, Syria has attempted to assemble liquid-fueled Scud C missiles, and is developing longer-range missile programs such as the Scud D as well as other variants, also with assistance from Moscow and Pyongyang. Media reports indicate that Syria has discussed procurement of the No-Dong intermediate-range missile with North Korea.

SSRC & Procurement

Damascus has established an intricate network of agencies, headed by the Ministry of National Defense and coordinated via its Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC), to advance its missile program. In addition, the Higher Institute for Applied Sciences and Technology (HIAST) has been linked by Japan and the UK to Syrian missile, chemical and biological weapons programs. It should be noted that HISAT participates in scientific cooperation and exchanges with the European Community, United Nations organizations, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as British, Canadian, and German universities.

Iskander-E missile

In January 2005, media reports indicated that Syria was attempting to negotiate the purchase of Russia's Iskander-E missile (range of 280 km and a 480 kg-payload). Negotiations were ultimately unsuccessful; however, the Iskander-E would have provided Syria with an accurate projectile.

Syrian Scud Test Flight

In May 2005, Israeli officials reported a Syrian test launch of one Scud-B and two Scud-D missiles, the latter capable of a 435 mile range. One of the missiles apparently disintegrated over Turkish territory. According to Israeli officials, the missiles utilized North Korean technology and were designed to deliver air-burst chemical weapons.

Other Methods of Delivery

Syria maintains 10 squadrons of fighter-ground attack aircraft (Su-24, Su-22 and MiG-23 BN), 16 squadrons of fighter aircraft (MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25 and MiG-29A, and Su-27).

Chemical & Biological Weapons:

Syria currently possesses a stockpile of 100- 200 Scud missiles fitted with sarin warheads. A number of these missiles may be fitted with V-agent warheads. In addition, Syria is believed to have stockpiled several hundred tons of sarin and mustard agents loaded onto artillery shells and air-dropped munitions.

In December 2001, the U.S. National Intelligence Council reported that Syria “has developed CW warheads for its Scuds and has an offensive BW program." During an interview published in 2004, Syrian President Bashar Assad admitted that Damascus had developed chemical and biological weapons as a last resort defense against Israel.

Conclusion:

The regime of Bashar al-Assad in Damascus lies between Iraq and a very hard place – nuclear-armed Israel. From the recent renewed forward deployment of Russian naval power once again being based at the Syrian port of Tartus, to multiple political assassinations in Lebanon linked to Syria, to the July 2007 explosion of a VX chemical warhead mounted on a ballistic missile at a secret weapons plant near Aleppo, to the highly secretive September 2007 Israeli ground/air assault on what was identified as an under-construction North Korean nuclear weapons facility in northern Syria, to the intermittent threats of war over the Golan Heights, to the assassination of master terrorist Imad Fayez Mughniyeh in Damascus (directly under the noses of Syrian al-Mukhabarat) last February, and the promised retaliatory strike, to the most recent reports concerning the status of Syrian military intelligence chief Assef Shawqat all serve to underscore that the regime in Damascus has many forces tearing at it from multiple axes.

The potential threat of the Syrian regime to lash out against Israel, in concert with the aforementioned terrorist proxies and consistent with the agenda of its Iranian ally, cannot be understated nor underestimated. A massive Syrian preemptive missile-borne chemical warfare assault against Israel is the most significant near-term impetus for a regional war. This would clearly be a war of unimaginable consequences. Such a scenario was the apparent driving force behind the probability versus risk assessment which subsequently determined the urgency for the Israeli government to complete the recent “Turning Point 2” exercise.

Exclusive: Amid new Iranian threat, Israel connects to America’s Ballistic Missile Early Warning System

April 15, 2008, 12:36 PM (GMT+02:00)

Israel requested the hook-up to the BMEWS for early warning to defend itself against Iranian missile attack. Tuesday, April 15, Iran’s deputy C-in-C Mohammad Reza Ashtiani threatened to eliminate Israel from “the scene of the universe” if it launches a military attack on the Islamic state.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report the system operates from three global centers – the US Thule Air Base in Greenland, where the 12th Space Warning Squadron is located; the Clear Air Force Station in Alaska and the British RAF long-range radar station at Fylingdales, Yorkshire, in England.

This is the third time Israel has been connected to the BMEWS. The first was in 1991 before the first Gulf War and the second in 2003 before the US invasion of Iraq. Then, Israel feared Iraqi missile attack, which indeed materialized in 1991. Now, US military sources interpret the request as signifying Israel’s sense of the need to prepare for an Iranian missile attack in the not-too-distant future.

Such an attack could develop from a US or Israeli strike against Iran, or any war situation involving Israel, Syria or Hizballah. Tehran might also stage a pre-emptive strike if early intelligence was received of an impending US or Israeli attack on Iran, Syria or Hizballah.

These sources stressed that Iran could even decide to lash out against Israel after the event in reprisal for an American assault, not necessarily on its nuclear sites but on Revolutionary Guards bases involved in directing, arming and training militias for attacks on US troops in Iraq. In such a contingency, Tehran could decide to hit back at US bases and strategic sites in the Persian Gulf and Middle East at large, including Israel.

The hook-up to the US early warning system will give Israel a better chance to prepare its Arrow and Patriot missile defense systems – and the US to prepare its own Israel-based Patriot batteries - in good time to ward off an Iranian missile attack. The BMEWS would start beaming data on an incoming Iranian missile at the launching stage and before it is airborne.

American military sources have no doubt that if an Iranian missile barrage targets Tel Aviv, Israel will counter with a missile attack on Tehran or Damascus.

Sean,

Do you think the time frame of a possible attack from Syria or Iran into Israel could happen with the ex President over there?

And that is good news that Israel is plugging into the missile defense system. Since they seem to be the focus on as much hatred to them as people have towards the USA.

SeanOsborne said...

I think the war we're talking about is about as imminent as "imminent" can be.

I think, (and I've held spoken and written about this view since the conclusion of the 2006 Hezbollah-Israel war), that the timing of this is dependent on which side preemptively strikes the other first.

My estimate is that Syria, HAMAS and Hezbollah (under Iranian direction) will launch their preemptive first. The specific when is unknown, but sooner rather than later imho.

More information coming in, Sean, on troop movements. The Syrians have moved another division, an entire division to the israeli-syrian-lebanese border.

I understand that imminent is inevitable. I guess since I don't trust any of our enemies, I look at the up coming war that the Hamas, Syrians, Hizbollah and the likes using the Ex-President as a shield to avoid a retaliation strike. Just a concerned thought on my part. Again, I just don't trust our enemy. He may be over there doing something that most Americans would think stupid, Talking to our enemy, but he is still a citizen of the USA and an Ex Pres.

SeanOsborne said...

For what it's worth... I am unable to find a single reference to the identification of the Syrian armored units ("10th corps" and "14th division") identified by Debka.

There are problems with the reported nomenclature as well as with type of unit. Seems to be an unintentional gaffe or an over-zealous attempt to ID specific Syrian Army armored corps, dividiond and brigades.

I'm looking into this further in thinking it's an ill-informed or typographical nomnclature error issue rather than a deliberate disinformational tactical SITREP. Syrian armored and/or mechanized units are well identified.

Seems to me that Debka needs a qualified MI reporter/analyst, and I say this with all due respect to the current Debka staff.

ev said...

Talked it over with a friend, Sean. He thinks its a mechanized infantry division.

Israel beefs up forces holding line against Gaza Palestinian border onslaught
April 16, 2008, 9:26 AM (GMT+02:00)

DEBKAfile's military sources report a large Palestinian force spearheaded by Hamas has been buffeting the border opposite Beeri and Alumim kibbutzim since Tuesday night injuring 4 Israeli soldiers, three Wednesday morning, April 16. Heavy fighting continues, in some places on the Israeli side of the border, including Nahal Oz, after Palestinians broke through to the barrier. They report 5 dead in clashes with Israeli troops.

The Palestinians are using mortars, anti-tank weapons and heavy machine guns against Israeli forces and civilian locations. At least 10 Qassam missiles were fired early Wednesday against Sderot and Ashkelon. The border barrier opposite Kibbutz Nirim was blown up. Nahal Oz, where Palestinian terrorists murdered two Israelis last week, is being shelled.

Lst night, Palestinian machine gun fire was aimed directly for the first time at the houses of a kibbutz, Ain Hashlosha. Overnight, Israeli air strikes hit two terrorist targets. In Jebalya, a Jihad Islami gunman was killed riding a motorbike; several were injured in Sejaya.

If the pattern of 2006 is followed, the Gaza fighting will be followed by a Hezbollah op.

'Course whatever the Op Plan is, it was designed and dictated from Tehran.

War with Israel is possible and we are getting ready – Assad

April 17, 2008, 1:31 PM (GMT+02:00)

The Syrian ruler Bashar Assad made this statement in a speech in Damascus reported Thursday, April 17.

Earlier this week, DEBKAfile’s military sources reported that Damascus has deployed the 10th armored corps at the Massaneh crossing of Mount Hermon. It links up with the northwestern positions the 14th division took up last month on the Syrian-Israeli border which cuts through the Hermon range.

Syrian troops are now strung along a continuous crescent-shaped line from the central Lebanese mountains through Mt Dov on the western slopes of Mt. Hermon and up to southeastern Lebanon. This deployment, commanding Syria’s Israeli and Lebanese borders, is under the command of the president’s brother, Maher Assad.

The 10th armored corps was moved forward straight after Syria’s snap civil defense exercise which crashed after three hours last Thursday, April 10. The exercise was ordered without notice by president Bashar Assad on the last day of Israel’s five-day homeland defense drill.

DEBKAfile’s military sources are criticizing Israel officials for attributing Syria’s latest military movements to domestic troubles inside the Syrian leadership. They say this is throwing sand in the public’s eyes and at one with the government’s practice of playing down all the heightened military threats to Israel – whether from Syria, the Lebanese Hizballah or the Palestinian Hamas in Gaza.

The IDF’s Northern Command officers report that the Syrian army’s buildup opposite Israel has accelerated in April and warn that its units are arrayed for a quick transition to attack mode.

The link-up between Syria’s 10th and 14th divisions on the border running through Mt Hermon should have been a wake-up call for the government in Jerusalem, they say, and elicited counter-moves to show Damascus that Israel is ready to meet every contingency.

Sunday, April 13, prime minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas met briefly to rough out the position Abbas will put before President George W. Bush whom he meets at the White House in ten days. Olmert made the gesture of licensing the entry to Israel of 5,000 Palestinian construction workers. This gesture was challenged by security services as a carrying the risk of terrorist infiltration and by economic leaders who say the Palestinians will take Israeli jobs.

http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=5196

With this being reported and the reports of shootings across the border, is the plan still to wait till the meeting with President Bush or has that been canceled since Jimmy Carters meeting? Also why run any plans by President Bush? We, The USA, have already said we won't talk to the Syrians since they support Terrorism. Well, any normal American doesn't. Pelosi will and Carter will but they are a different story.

With respect to "anonymous sayeth", the second part of which I did not comment on previously...

1) If these individuals are al-Ikhwan in the West who were born in Muslim nations - they are not traitors per se, but are part of the Islamic 5th Column within our society. They are doing exactly that which their ideology/theology dictates they must do. Treason does not apply, but sedition does. And the term 'enemy combatant' is applicable as well.

2.) If these individuals are embedded as assistants the to DEP-SECDEF or hold similar positions within the elected, appointed or hired government employees, and have taken an oath of office or employment, or signed certain legal documents to the same effect (i.e. to defend the Constitution), and are acting within the agenda of the Ikhwan (identified in federal evidence entered at the HLF trial) against the Constitution, then, treason is the correct charge to be brought against them.

With respect to Anonymous' cryptic comment about "Lexington", I'm sorry but I'm not making any positive connection with that single word, there is no point of reference.

Please, make your point a little clearer. Thanks.

With indications of the West being lead by Islamic agents in the High offices, THE HIGHEST OFFICE is up for grabs by a couple of individuals that have been implemented in terroristic connections. Such as Sen. Clinton and American Muslim Council which supports Hamas....

http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/1/29/230642.shtml

And Obama and we all know of his Muslim background indicated here.

Article written by Daniel Pipes
http://www.danielpipes.org/article/5286

So if we are not careful, there could be connections at our highest office and not just in positions of influence like Sean has mentioned with Mr. Hersham Islam.

And I don't believe it is just me who is seeing the connection as written here by Front Page Magazine and David Horowitz.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1036747/posts

Now this being said again, I feel that the ones in office that are guilty of treason needs to be dealt with and NOT promoted. Anyone with a questionable background like Hersham would not even be able to get hired in a government job but yet The assistant to the Deputy Sec of Defense did. Sorry, it is just a sore subject when an OUTSTANDING AMERICAN like Major Coughlin gets booted and Islam is still able to keep his job.

Rememeber domestic "he's not a muslim" stadium suicide bomber Hinrichs and his biggest defender in concert with the TLAs, OU president Boren?

Here's what Hagmann has to say on Boren:

"Now, Mr. Boren continues his campaign of willful perversion of the facts, deliberate fabrications, and a contemptible disregard for the safety of his campus by continuing his disingenuous charade and deceitful mischaracterization of the events of October 1, 2005 by emphasizing tolerance and sensitivity over truth and security. As director of the Northeast Intelligence Network, I am urging everyone, especially those with vested interests in the safety and security of the student body and campus, to call for the immediate resignation of David Lyle Boren." -- Douglas J. Hagmann, Investigator, Director, Northeast Intelligence Network.

http://www.homelandsecurityus.com/OU042707

Now, Boren has announced he's going to be an integral part of "he's not a muslim" barak hussein obama's team on NATIONAL SECURITY.

WASHINGTON -- University of Oklahoma President David Boren on Friday endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president, citing the Illinois senator's "good judgment" in warning against the Iraq war five years ago.

Boren's endorsement was part of a joint announcement with another former Democratic senator, Sam Nunn of Georgia.

Both men will serve as advisers to Obama's campaign on national security and foreign policy.

When in the Senate, Boren served as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Nunn led the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"I am joining Sen. Barack Obama's advisory team on foreign policy and national security because I believe it is my duty as a citizen to do all I can to help our country at this critical moment," Boren said.

Not the fact that he was denied entry into the OU Game where thousands could have been hurt or KILLED. And the fact that he was a room mate to another Muslim like himself and was a member of a Mosque just Yards from his apartment."

If Boren has anything to do with National Security and Obama in Office as President, we will be so deep in Sharia stuff the fans want be able to run for them being clogged.

Must be adjoining offices like the one Mr. Hersham Islam is in right NOW.

With the naked looting of the nation, jihadi symps and infiltration at the highest levels of government including the security apparatus, and now *food rationing* in (what used to be) America, one might wonder what will happen next.

It should be very interesting to see what happens when tens of thousands of America's finest, with fresh urban combat experience, come home ( just before and/or just after November elections ) and can't find staples like rice, flour, cooking oil, etc., have trouble finding a sustenace job because there are 30 million illegals standing outside Home Depot every morning taking those $5 - $20 an hour jobs, find out it costs $50 to fill the tank, and (G-d forbid) have to learn to say "comrade barak hussein obama" or "comrade hillary rodham clinton."

Regarding the enlargement of the State of Israel referenced in the current update of 27 December...

Please get out your maps, the more detailed the better, but use the one in the main entry if you have to, and follow the lands of the tribes identified in Genesis 15:18. We are about to circumnavigate the boundaries of the future Israel in a counter-clockise direction, exactly as it is described in the text of Genesis. Consider this a Biblical geographical connect-the-dots exercise.

Beginning at the "nahar" (brook or river) of Egypt...this is not, as some assume, a reference to the Nile River. It is instead a direct reference to the Wadi al-Arish which goes from the Mediterranean coastal town of Al Arish at 31.5 north/33.42 east (about 30 miles south of the present day Egypt-Gazan border) and then generally southwards onward towards the plateau of et Tih in central Sinai.

Then we go further south into the region of the first tribe mentioned in the text, the Kenites, of southern Sinai, Mt Sinai.

Then we progress to the Kennizzites (present day western Saudi Arabia), Kadmonites (generally the area between central Israel and central Iraq), Hitties and Perizzites(West Bank and Negev), Rephaims (eastern present day Jordan and western Saudi Arabia), Amorites (the present day site of ancient Babylon or Old Babylon circa 1900 B.C.), Canaan (present day central Israel), Girgashites (regions east of the Sea of Galilee (present day northern Jordan and southern Syria and west to southern Lebanon), and back west to the Mediterranean coast and from there to the central region of the ancient Jebusites (Jerusalem), and the captial city of the Messianic Kingdom.

Based upon the connect-a-dot lines I have drawn on my map, the future borders of Israel will make it at least as large as present day Egypt - or about 387,000 square miles which is nearly 20 times its present geographical land area.

The is a repost of a comment I made on 27DEC08, edited to get the correct spelling of Bill Salus book. I'm working on a full length write up on specifics within this subject per Daniel 9.

I tend to think our CENTCOM bases in Iraq and 5th Fleet in the Gulf/Arabian Sea will be primarily concerned with the enemy in Iran, and those in Afghanistan with the western FATA areas in Pakistan. The rest of CENTCOM in the HOA (Horn or Africa) as it will become preoccupied in Somalia.

However, center stage is in Israel/Gaza/West Bank and in the surounding countries of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Sinai and Egypt.

Joel Rosenberg has a new article running that's a great early synopsis.

Bill Salus book "Isralestine" is a must read concerning the events which the war today is quite likely precipitating.
